ssu b.a. distinctives

The Arts curriculum at St. Stephen’s University has three main distinctives:

1. The Humanities Core Program: an integrated and interdisciplinary overview of the culture and values of Western Civilization from the ancient Greeks to the present.  These core courses—twelve courses offered over four terms in Ancient History & Religious Studies, History, Literature, and Philosophy—provide the basis for understanding the development of society, including the interconnections between Christianity and culture, and establish the foundation for the more specialized elective courses that constitute the basis for each student’s Major, Minor, or Honours.

2. Two complete terms of study abroad, one normally spent in Asia and the other in Europe, designed to deepen the students’ sense of history and broaden their worldview.  More information on these study abroad terms can be found here >>>

3. A unique community of learning that encourages engagement with challenging ideas through class discussion as well as one on one dialogue between faculty, staff and students.

The value of a Liberal Arts degree:

More students are enrolled in the liberal arts studies than any other academic program across the nation. The goal of liberal arts studies is to provide an education that serves as the foundation for the rest of one's life.  Students with an SSU B.A. degree may go on to pursue professional degrees (such as law, education, international studies or urban planning), graduate study in any of the Arts disciplines, or begin a career in the workforce.

We believe that the integration of the classical disciplines provided by an SSU B.A. degree, supported by a strong Christian community, small classes, and our study abroad programs provide an excellent atmosphere for students to participate in an education that is second to none. Students whose quest is Christian spiritual and intellectual formation will learn to think, believe, and articulate their ideas and values within a global perspective.
