Tuition & Fees

PAYING FOR AN SSU EDUCATION

Red Room4.png

ADMISSIONS  /  TUITION & FEES

We try to keep our tuition as low as possible to ensure our programs are as accessible as possible.

St. Stephen's University recognizes that enroling in one of our programs is a significant investment, whether financially, with your time and energy, or in how you may need to restructure your lives. We don't take this for granted.

As a private not-for-profit graduate school with no formal denominational affiliation, SSU does not receive any governmental or denominational support. This means that all of our operational costs are covered by tuition and our generous donors. Our tuition is therefore unusually low for a University like ours and is far lower than the cost of tuition at most universities in the United States.

With this in mind, SSU is committed to keeping the cost of our tuition as low as possible for our students and never wants finances to be a barrier to studying with us. To this end, we offer generous bursaries and scholarships that you can learn more about on our FINANCIAL AID page. Further, we welcome a CONVERSATION with our prospective students to help us come up with a financial arrangement that works for everyone.

QUICK FACTS

  • All tuition is in Canadian dollars

  • Tuition per credit hour — $395 CAD

  • Tuition per 3 c/h course — $1,185 CAD

  • Tuition is the same for domestic, U.S., and international students

DISCLAIMER:

St. Stephen's University reserves the right to alter the cost of tuition for its programs at any time, but we will ensure students receive adequate warning and time to make the necessary adjustments.

REMOVING FINANCIAL BARRIERS

Finances shouldn't be a barrier to an SSU education. At St. Stephen's University, we want to do everything we can to make sure that anyone who wants to study with us is able to do so.

So, if you do not think that you will be able to afford our tuition, even with one of the scholarships or bursaries listed above, we invite you to reach out to us and start a conversation — We are eager to come up with a financial arrangement that works for everyone.

If the cost of our tuition is preventing you from applying, we invite you to apply online anyway as the first step to a conversation with us about how to make your academic pilgrimage at SSU more financially feasible. The first step, then, is to apply online, and once you're accepted into your program, we will work with you to come up with a workable solution.

NOTES

All tuition amounts also do not include student fees, as these are applied in each semester in which a student is registered for courses regardless of the number of courses taken and therefore vary depending on how many semesters a student takes to complete their degree program. Student fees are $200 CAD per semester.

* Each fall semester (Sept. – Dec.) includes a Theology & Culture short in-person 7-day residency on campus at St. Stephen's University, which includes accommodations and meals. Students still need to purchase their own flights and make arrangements to get to St. Stephen, New Brunswick (instructions provided). Spring semesters (Jan. – Apr.) do not include a short residency and are entirely online, but there is an option to travel to SSU for a short 7-day residency in May for an additional cost of $700 CAD (excluding flight and related travel costs).

** The study abroad trip takes place each year in Ireland. The total amount quoted includes tuition and the all costs of the trip once the student arrives, including accommodations, meals, internal travel, and academic sessions and events. Students therefore need to arrange and purchase their own flights.

NOTES

All tuition amounts do not include student fees, as these are applied in each semester in which a student is registered for courses regardless of the number of courses taken and therefore vary depending on how many semesters a student takes to complete their degree program. Student fees are $200 CAD per semester.

* The Peace & Justice in-person 9-day residency includes accommodations and meals, which is an $800 additional cost (Note: The actual cost is $1,400 per student, but this has been generously subsidized by one of SSU's financial supporters to keep the cost more reasonable for students). Students still need to purchase their own flights and make arrangements to get to the location of the module. The location is either Park Hall in St. Stephen, NB or Mark Centre in Abbotsford, BC depending on the year.

** The study abroad trip takes place each year in Scotland and N.Ireland. The total amount quoted includes tuition and the all costs of the trip once the student arrives, including accommodations, meals, internal travel, and academic sessions and events. Students therefore need to arrange and purchase their own flights.

*** The costs of the Reconciliation Semester include tuition and accommodations & meals for the three hybrid online courses and in-person two-week residency in St. Stephen, New Brunswick and the Peskotomuhkati Nation’s Camp Chiputneticook. Students therefore need to arrange and purchase their own flights to St. Stephen.

**** The costs of the Bethlehem components of Track 3 are in CAD based on the cost of $2,290 USD for tuition and residency accommodations on the BIPJ website (bipj.org/admissions) using the exchange rate of 1 USD = 1.28227 CAD and 1 CAD = 0.779865 USD; these amounts therefore vary depending on the exchange rate.

***** The Theology & Culture short in-person 7-day residency takes place on campus at St. Stephen's University and includes accommodations and meals. Students still need to purchase their own flights and make arrangements to get to St. Stephen, New Brunswick (instructions provided). Spring semesters (Jan. – Apr.) do not include a short residency and are entirely online. The amount listed includes a 1 c/h discount ($395 CAD) on the 11 c/h Theology & Culture semester for students who take all courses in this semester. When a student does not take all courses in this semester, the student must pay the full amount for 11 c/h. This increases the tuition of this semester to $5,095 CAD for a semester that includes a short 7-day residency or $4,345 CAD for an online semester that does not include a residency.
